Renmin University of China (RUC) is the first comprehensive research university established by the People’s Republic of China. Its predecessor was Shanbei Public School, founded in 1937. Chinese heads of state MAO Zedong, DENG Xiaoping, JIANG Zemin, HU Jintao and XI Jinping have all paid close attention to RUC’s development. Each has visited RUC’s campus and delivered speeches or written inscriptions for the university. RUC has made countless contributions to the development of the society. It was named the China’s flagship for social sciences and humanities education. RUC is one of the “211” and “985” Project universities.

Since Renmin University was established, more than 250,000 outstanding RUC alumni have made important contributions in various sectors including government, academia, finance, communication and education.

Renmin University offers 81 bachelor degree programs, 186 master degree programs, 125 Ph.D. degree programs. RUC has 20 first-level discipline programs that are entitled with the Ph.D degree and 19 mobile centers for post-doctoral research.

Renmin University of China is a comprehensive research-oriented university focusing on humanities and social sciences. It also offers a range of courses in the natural sciences, information technology and environmental sciences. The university’s overriding tasks have consistently been the pursuit of truth and progress, cultural transmission and educating the country’s future elites. RUC is an important base for training high-caliber professionals in the social sciences and humanities and houses a number of influential research centers and think tanks.

Till 2017, there are 22749 full-time students in Renmin University of China. Among full-time students, there are 9558 undergraduate students, 7890 graduate students, 3810 Ph.D. students, and 1491 international students.

Renmin University has established university-level partnerships with 252 universities from 57 countries and regions all over the world. RUC has also hosted or organized a series of high-level international conferences on its campus, and conducted numerous international research projects. More than 200 world-renowned scholars and famous guests have been granted the titles of honorary doctor, honorary professor or adjunct professor. Since 2009, RUC has offered a range of outstanding international programs, including the annual International Summer School and a variety of MA programs fully taught and administered in English.

RUC’s Institute for the Promotion of Chinese Language and Culture is one of the earliest research centers set up by Hanban/Confucius Institute Headquarters. It conducts a wide range of research projects on Chinese contemporary and traditional culture. As of 2007, RUC and Hanban have regularly co-hosted the World Conference on Sinology.

The vision of RUC is reflected in our logo, which is composed of three “人” (ren), a Chinese character that can be translated into person, human or humanity. The logo stands for “people’s university,” “the spirit of humanism” and “a focus on the humanities and social sciences.”  RUC’s vision is to become a world-class university that equips future leaders, produces cutting-edge research and promotes global academic exchange. With the support of a dedicated leadership, its students, faculty and staff, RUC continues to grow in influence as one of the most important trend-setters in Chinese higher education today.
