Situated in Hengyang, a historical and cultural city in central Hunan Province, P.R. China, the university of South China (hereafter referred to as USC or the university) is a comprehensive public university with a history of 61 years. The university was merged in 2000 by the former Hengyang Medical College, founded in 1958 and administrated by Hunan Province, Central South Institute of Technology, in 1959, and the 6th Nuclear Institute, in 1962, both administrated by the former Ministry of Nuclear Industry. The university's Clinical Medicine and Chemistry disciplines have entered the top 1% of the ESI global rankings. In 2019, the university tied for 65th place among mainland Chinese universities in the Times Higher Education World University list.

As one of the first-tier universities on the Mainland, P.R. China, USC covers academic research and education in 9 disciplines, namely, engineering, medicine, management, sciences, economics, philosophy, law, literature and art. USC comprises 27 colleges and schools, 6 affiliated hospitals and 17 teaching hospitals. The university offers 68 bachelor programs, 25 master programs and 5 doctorate programs in first-level disciplines to students from all over the world. It also offers two special training programs --'Outstanding Engineers' and 'Outstanding Doctors'-- financed by the Ministry of Education. Currently, there are nearly 35000 full- time undergraduates, 4000 postgraduates and doctoral students, 642 international students pursuing their studies on the campus.

The university provides international students with four levels of training: Foundation Program (Chinese language learning), Undergraduate Program, Postgraduate Program and Doctoral Program, which relates to 14 majors such as mechanical engineering, civil engineering, software engineering, clinical medicine, international economy and trade, Chinese, nuclear science and technology, and basic medicine. So far, there have been three batches of 48 graduates, among whom 40 majoring in MBBS ，1 majoring in international economics and trade，4 majoring in mechanical engineering，2 majoring in marketing and 1 majoring in applied economics.

The university encourages students to study hard while actively creating conditions to help students who are interested in scientific research. An international MBBS student of Batch 2016, has published SCI papers in the international journals Trends in Cardiovascular Medicine (IF=3.07) and IJC Heart & Vasculature (IF=4.0). Zeng Yixin and Chen Guoqiang, the incumbent academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, once studied here.

Actively involved in global interactions since its foundation, the university has established official cooperative relations with nearly 100 universities, organizations and enterprises at home and abroad.USC has long been enjoying a nationwide reputation for its medical and nuclear sciences and environment-oriented disciplines, and has nurtured 160 thousands of talents and professionals in these fields as well as others in 61 years.
