Wenzhou Medical University (WMU) is a higher institution under the administration of Zhejiang Provincial Government. It can trace its origin back to the former Zhejiang Specialized Medical School established in 1912. In August 1958, a group of faculty was sent from Zhejiang Medical College in Hangzhou to help establish the Second Zhejiang Medical College in Wenzhou, whose name was changed to Wenzhou Medical College in accordance with its location. In 2013 Wenzhou Medical College was officially renamed Wenzhou Medical University. In 2015, it was shortlisted as one of the co-development universities by the Ministry of Education, National Health and Family Planning Commission and Zhejiang Provincial Government. In 2017, it became a Priority Development University in Zhejiang Province.
WMU started its five–year undergraduate programs in 1958 and master’s programs in 1978, making it one of the first institutions in China authorized to confer master’s degree and doctor’s degree. Now WMU has 4 Primary Category Discipline PhD Programs (Clinical Medicine, Pharmacy, Biomedical Engineering, Basic Medicine), 12 Primary Category Discipline Master Programs (Clinical Medicine, Nursing Traditional Chinese Pharmacology, Biology, Biomedical Engineering, Basic Medical Sciences, Chinese and Western Integrative Medicine and Pharmacology,Medical Techonology, Stomotology, Public Health and Prevention Medicine, Public Management), 8 Professional Master’s Programs, and Postdoctoral Scientific Research Mobile Stations under the Primary Category Discipline of Clinical Medicine. The Clinical Medicine, Chemistry, Pharmacology and Toxicology Programs of WMU all rank within global top 1% in ESI rankings. Notably, the Clinical Medicine Program ranks within the global top 0.22% in ESI rankings. WMU ranks No. 80 in ESI rankings among all colleges and universities in China. WMU features 1 National Engineering Research Center, 1 State Key Laboratory, 13 Provincial or Ministerial Key Laboratories/Research Centers, 1 Provincial “Collaborative Innovation Center under the Zhejiang 2011Collaborative Innovation Plan, 2 Provincial Top Priority Disciplines, 3 Provincial Level-A Disciplines of Distinction, 7 Level-B Disciplines of Distinction, 10 Key Disciplines for Colleges and Universities in Zhejiang and 2 Provincial Priority Development Disciplines.
WMU takes to heart the needs of the people and society, and stays committed to the mission of educating healthcare professionals of excellence, those that operate with confidence and vision, and strive to achieve and innovate. WMU offers 26 undergraduate programs in 4 major disciplines of medicine, science, engineering and management. As the quality of education improves steadily, in 2017, All 18 undergraduate programs of WMU were able to fulfill their enrolment quota with first tier students according to their scores in the National College Entrance Examinations, and 15 of those programs had the highest admission scores compared to the same programs in other universities in Zhejiang. According to the report of Zhejiang Province higher education institution evaluation, WMU’s graduates of Class of 2014 (three years after graduation) and Class of 2016 (one year after graduation)ranked the best among all the graduates from the Province’s colleges and universities in terms of career development and talent cultivation quality. WMU Graduates from its Clinical Medicine Program have consistently ranked within 10% nationwide in terms of their passing rate of National qualification examination for medical practitioners. At present, the total enrollment of WMU amounts to 16,507 (exclude Wenzhou Medical University Renji College), including 2967 postgraduate students and 135 doctorate students, covering a full range of programs that include bachelor’s and master’s degrees, doctoral and postdoctoral studies, and full-time to continuing education programs, with students not only from mainland China but also overseas and Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan.
WMU has more than 10,000 faculty and staff, including academic appointments of the affiliated hospitals, and over 1600 of them hold senior professional titles. The main campus of the university has 1422 full time teachers. A batch of excellent teachers were selected to be included in the National Thousand Talents Plan, National Ten Thousand Talents Plan, Yangtze Fund Scholars, National “Hundred-Thousand-Ten Thousand Talents Project. National Young Expert with Remarkable Contributions, New Century Talent Supporting Project by Ministry of Education, Young Expert with Remarkable Contributions by Health and Family Planning Commission, Province Senior Experts, Thousand Talents Program of Zhejiang Province, and be invited by Distinguished Professors of some provincial universities and colleges. Teachers of WMU won the title of National outstanding Teachers, National Moral Models, National Woman Pace Setter and Individuals of Excellence in National health and family planning system. The faculty of the School of Ophthalmology & Optometry with WMU was honored as one of the Faculty Teams in Higher Education Institutions that Follow the Example of the Late Professor Huang Danian And the university was awarded Organization of Distinction in Talent Management by the provincial government.
WMU has 4 national featured majors, 1 national faculty team, 1 training mode innovation experimental zone, 2 national experimental teaching base demonstration center, 1 national practice base, 5 national excellent resource-sharing courses, 1 national bilingual demonstration course, 2 national English courses brand for overseas students, 5 Pilot programs of Excellent Doctor Training demostration, 1 pilot project of national comprehensive reform on disciplines and the university has won 2 second prizes of national teaching award.
In recent years, WMU has undertaken more than 1000 scientific research projects of National level. More than 140 projects have won provincial, ministerial or national prizes, including 1 first prize of State Technological Invention Award, 4 second prizes of State Technological Invention Award, 2 second prizes of National Award for Technological Invention, 1 first prize of Technology Award of Ministry of Education, 4 first prizes of Chinese Medical Science and Technology Award, 1 first prize of Chinese Pharmaceutical Association Science and Technology Award, 1 major contribution award of Zhejiang Province Science and Technology Major Progress, 13 first prizes of Zhejiang Science and Technology Award, 1 second prize of Human and Social Science Award of Ministry of Education, and 3 first prizes of Zhejiang Philosophical and Social Science Award.
Composed of three campuses, WMU covers a total area of 1,900 mu with a building space of 550,000 m2. The university library has a collection of 1,970,000 volumes. WMU publishes 5 academic Journals and 1 academic newspaper, among which 3 journals are listed as China science and technology core journals. In addition, our journal, the Chinese Journal of Optometry & Ophthalmology and Visual Science, is listed as one of Chinese Medical Association Journals. Four of five affiliated hospitals are ranked as Grade 3 Class A. WMU has 19 non-directly affiliated teaching hospitals across the province. The First Affiliated Hospital and Eye Hospital are among the top 100 hospitals selected by Chinese Academy of Medicine in 2017 base on their technology impact. The Affiliated Eye Hospital topped the list of “2017 Nature Index Rankings of Best Ophthalmology Departments in China”.
